Notes

In this monumental work, which was first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1865, Bougereau presents a woman with three children huddled in front of the church of the Madeleine in Paris. With its strongly centralised, pyramidal composition and low viewpoint, the painting is conceived as an altarpiece, with the mother becoming a kind of secular madonna.

Presented by Charles Harding Esq., 1897.
