Notes

A design for an illustration to Edward Moxon's edition of Tennyson's poems, published in 1857. The intense overall handing of a naturalistic composition may well have been influenced by Durer, who was considered by Ruskin in his lectures at the working mens college. St Cecilia is thought to have been based on Elizabeth Siddal.

Purchased and presented by subscribers, 1903.
