Notes

Fairfax Murray had claimed that this work was a later one than the finished pen drawing. Surtees, however (vol. 1, p. 63), claims that this is an early work. More recently Christopher Newall has pointed out that this drawing stands on its own and was then re-worked as the finished composition in the Fitzwilliam Museum. Mary Magdalene may well be based on Fanny Cornforth.

Purchased and presented by subscribers, 1903.
