This is one of a large number of David Cox watercolours held in the collection of Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. Cox was the most famous Birmingham artist of the mid-nineteenth century, with a national reputation for his lively landscape paintings. He also painted detailed studies of urban architecture, as with many of his landscapes, he includes people going about their daily business.
