This is one of a number of drawings in the collection executed on pages from the same notebook with the watermark 'Joynson 1855.' Betty Elzea suggests that the main sketch of a young man has been copied from a sixteenth century portrait. She also mentions that the head of a bearded man may have been drawn when Sandys was researching portraits of Raphael and Michelangelo for his caricature 'The Nightmare' (Frederick Sandys 1829-1904: A Catalogue Raisonné, p. 145).
