Notes

These studies appear to be drawings of tomb effigies. It seems most likely that they were copied from a nineteenth-century sourcebook of effigies, possibly Charles Stothard's 'Monumental Effigies of Great Britain' (first pub 1817) which included multiple views of effigies to aid artists in their quest for accurate costume. Elzea sites the source as possibly J S Cotman. Formerly attributed to Ford Madox Brown.

Bequeathed by James Richardson Holliday, 1927.
