Notes

Probably a prepatory sketch for a stained glass window executed by Morris & Co. in 1873-74 for the Chapel of Jesus College, Cambridge. A stained glass design for the south transept, west wall, executed in 1874. It was subsequently used for the west window of the Church of All Hallows, Allerton, Liverpool in 1876, and the south transept chapel of St Paul in Morton, near Gainsborough, Lincolnshire in 1891.

Birmingham's collection also includes a cartooon and a realised panel for this design.

The inscription on the lower right of the drawing, 'to A C' was written by Burne-Jones. 'A C' may be Aglaia Coronio, a patron of both Burne-Jones and William Morris, and first cousin of Zambaco.

Bequeathed by James Richardson Holliday, 1927.
