The woman is the artist's wife, Mary Frances Crane. 'A Herald of Spring' was painted in Rome in April 1872 during the artist's first visit to Italy. Crane described it in his 'Reminiscences' as 'a figure in a pale green robe and pink scarf coming down a Roman street in the early morning', and thought of it as a record of the 'beauty of the Italian Spring'.
