Notes

Originating in the early 1840's the Birmingham Society of Arts & School of Design was primarily concerned with the 'art education of the town and especially with training workmen in the artistic trades'. During the fourteen years that the school was based at New Street, Birmingham, its students included 81 modellers, 100 brassfounders, 268 japanners, 249 engravers, 158 jewellers and silversmiths, 200 diesinkers, 50 glass painters and 50 chasers.
