Notes | After leaving the Royal Academy Schools, Louisa Starr spent a year at her family village of Cairate in Lombardy. The origins of this painting appear to date from this period, with her future husband and cousin Enrico Canziani, 'obtaining models for the picture with the peasants in groups, buying and selling in front of our house. The picture was called The Eternal Door because of the carved stone head of God the Father that still surmounts it...' | Presented by Estella Canziani, 1931. |
