This is one of a group of small tempera paintings by Estella Canziani in the Birmingham Collection. By all accounts lace making and weaving was an important facet of the daily lives of the women villagers that Estella Canziani encountered. Here the sitter wears a traditional fine lace cap that she may well have made herself.
