Notes | Wainwright was a Birmingham-born artist who began his career as a stained-glass designer for the local firm of John Hardman & Co. Wainwright specialised in historical watercolours, usually showing figures in seventeenth century dress. This early work, painted in Paris where Wainwright lived from 1881 to 1884, is a typical example.
