Notes | The Birmingham and Midland Institute was founded in 1854 for the 'diffusion and advancement of science, literature and art'. The foundation stone of the building in Paradise Street, Birmingham was laid by Prince Albert. In 1881 J H Chamberlain added a wing with a Gothic façade. The Midland Institute formed one building with the Birmingham Reference Library and both were demolished in the 20th century.
This medal commemorates the incorporation of the Institute in 1854 and depicts Sir William Siemens on the obverse.
