Notes | Rowlandson shows the breadth of his knowledge of the styles of other artists - for example - the way in which he draws the trees owes something not only to Canaletto (1697-1768), but also to the Dutch artists of the previous century such as Jacob van Ruisadael (1600-1670). The drawing, again in the handling of the trees and the foliage, may also be compared with the landscapes of Gainsborough ( 1727-1788). In addition, the disposition and the poses of the bathers reflect a profound appreciation of the art of the French masters of the rococo nude, François Boucher (1703-1770) and Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806). | Purchased from J Leslie Wright, 1945 |
