Watercolourist:J M W Turner - View biography for J M W Turner

Turner's principal tours in Germany were between 1833 and 1836 but he also travelled up and down the Rhine in the 1840s returning from Switzerland via Heidelberg in 1844. This sketch comes from one of the 'roll' sketchbooks which Turner invariably carried on his travels. Over the pencil outline he has added simple patches of colour which together model the contours of the landscape.

Presented by the Friends of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in memory of A E Whitley, 1945.
