The War Artist's Advisory Committee provided Henry Moore with the opportunity to make sketches of miners at work in his home town of Castleford in Yorkshire. Thirty years later Moore described his first impressions working in the mines: 'Crawling on sore hands and knees and reaching the actual coal-face was the biggest experience. If one was asked to describe what Hell might be like, this would do'.
