Notes

Wooden figures like this from Easter Island (or Rapa Nui) are possibly meant to represent deceased chiefs or minor gods. They were displayed during festivals and given a place of honour at important feasts. Their owners sometimes wore them attached to their clothing during dances. However little is really known about the Islanders' culture before European contact in the late 18th century.

Transferred from the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum.
