One of several studies in Birmingham's Collection for the Perseus Series of paintings (Series I is now in the Stattsgalerie, Stuttgart; Series II in the Southampton City Art Gallery).

These are studies for the arms and hands of Perseus in 'The Finding of Medusa' from the 'Perseus' series, both the Southampton and Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart versions. In the finished painting, Perseus holds a hand mirror in his left hand to look at the reflection of Medusa, while he grasps his sword in his right, preparing to behead her.
