Notes

In 1792 Lord Macartney was sent to China by Parliament to expand trade agreements and to set up a British embassy. Emperor Qing Long (1736 - 1795) refused both these requests. Fifty years later the First Opium war broke out between the Chinese and British over trade.

Presented by J Leslie Wright1953, received on his death, 1954.
