This painting is an example of Claude's mature classical landscape style. The Ponte Molle, a favoured motif, was a part-Roman, part-fifteenth century bridge spanning the River Tiber to the north of the Rome.

Bequeathed by E E Cook through the National Art Collections Fund, 1955.
