Notes

Mahogany watch stand and perpetual calendar, made by Thornhill and Company in London around 1900.This watch stand would feel very much at home in an Edwardian Englishman's study. The study and library were bastions of masculinity in large houses at this time and the simple un-fussy design of this piece would have been particularly suited to such an area. Desk clocks cost between 15shillings (75p) and £3.10.0 (£3.50) - roughly twice the weekly wage of a Birmingham brass worker in 1900.

Purchased from Edward H Pinto, 1965.
