Notes

These City of Birmingham scales were used to make sure traders charged the correct prices for their goods. In the middle ages, Birmingham's success was built upon its position as the leading market in the Midlands. The markets continued to be crucial to the development of the town and as such it was essential that the rules of fair trading were maintained. These scales formed part of a large group of equipment used at the beginning of the 20th century by the city authorities.

Presented by the Markets and Fairs Committee.
