Mrs Anne Hull Grundy donated a large collection of jewellery to Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. This was one of a number of donations she made to museums in this country. She was concerned that each collection she gave to a museum should suit its manufacturing history and existing collection, but she also wished to donate examples of work not already represented in our collections. This gold stickpin is set with a crystal intaglio. An intaglio is an image engraved into the back of a gem leaving all of the surrounding material in place. It is the opposite of a cameo, where the surrounding material is carved away leaving the image standing proud of the material surface. The new surface of the gem would be painted to leave a colourful lively picture behind.

Presented by Mrs Anne Hull Grundy, 1982.
