Ceramicist:Elizabeth Fritsch - View biography for Elizabeth Fritsch

Elizabeth Fritsch has been a working studio ceramist since the 1970s, having studied under Hans Coper at the Royal College of Art. Fritsch makes hand-built containers, using flattened coils or ribbons of clay joined together by pinching, which are then hand-painted with coloured slips involving three to six different colour firings. Her method of working is entirely experimental and improvised with no drawings or detailed plans to work from. This piece is part of a group of fictional archaeology pots from Tlön, inspired by the story of 'Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius' by the Argentinean writer Jorge Luis Borgës (1899-1986).

Presented by the Friends of Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery with 50% grant from the MGC/VandA Purchase Grant Fund.
