Notes | Craigie Aitchison is one of the few contemporary painters to inject new vitality into religious subjects, notably the Crucifixion. Here the luminous crucified figure of Christ seems to float in a dreamlike landscape. Abandoned by humanity, he is watched over by a solitary dog and a pair of birds perched on the arm of the cross. They unite in a silent spiritual communion with the dying Christ. | Purchased with assistance from the MGC/VandA Purchase Grant Fund, Trustees of the L.J.Cadbury Fund, the Public Picture Gallery Fund, the National Art Collections Fund and the Friends of Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, 1999. |
