Notes

Craigie Aitchison is one of the few contemporary painters to inject new vitality into religious subjects, notably the Crucifixion. Here the luminous crucified figure of Christ seems to float in a dreamlike landscape. Abandoned by humanity, he is watched over by a solitary dog and a pair of birds perched on the arm of the cross. They unite in a silent spiritual communion with the dying Christ.
