Notes

Emmy Bridgwater was a member of the Birmingham Group of Surrealists and took part in the International Surrealist show in Paris in 1947. She experimented with automatic drawing as a means of tapping into the subconscious. Her rapidly painted works have a spontaneous and urgent quality as she tried to record the fleeting sensations and imagery of dreams.

Purchased with assistance from Resource (VandA Purchase Grant Fund) and the Friends of Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery.
