Notes | In 1998 Himid was artist in residence at Tate Gallery St. Ives. Her studio based in a redundant Lifeguard's hut which offered a direct view of the sea and shore. She worked on a series of large paintings centred on images of empty rooms reflecting a sense of insecurity and abandonment. Images of the sea recur, near and distant, menacing and calm by turns. In this picture, the rolling waves seen through the windows appear to invade the dark interior. | Purchased by the Contemporary Art Society Special Collection Scheme with funds from the Arts Council Lottery Fund and the Friends of Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, 2001. |
