Notes

The term 'Famille Verte' refes to the glaze and means 'the green family'.
This bowl shows scenes from the Qing dynasty royal family, who came from Manchuria. One of the men wears a woolly hat and thick clothes because the north east of China is cold. The emperor wears a yellow robe. Only the emperor can wear yellow as it is the royal colour of the Qing dynasty. The woman in the pink dress smoking a pipe has a different hairstyle from the two servant girls. She might be the emperor's wife, concubine or mother.

Franklin Bequest, 2006.
