Notes

The design of this plate is very unusual. The central depiction is of the head and shoulders of a black person, wearing a laurel wreath and a black and white sash across one shoulder. It is an excellent example of Derby's version of the 'Imari ' pattern, named after a type of Japanese export porcelain. The design imitates the decorative colours and patterns used on these wares.

Presented by John Wilkins, 2007.
