Notes

This coin is from the Russian principality of Pskov. The figure depicted may be a portrait of Prince Dovmont, the legendary hero of the Pskov chronicles, who died in 1299. His sword was one of the treasures of the Grand Princes of Pskov. This coin is typical of mediaeval Russian coins, because it has an inscription in several lines of Cyrillic letters on the reverse.

Ian Donal Finney Bequest, 1993.
