Notes

Working in full opaque watercolour, or as here in fine illustrative line, McCail invents a nightmarish boys' own narrative. In correspondence he describes the source as a vivid dream, which occurred at a time when he 'had been trying to make large pencil drawings which depicted how a military-industrial system trained and used those whom it employed'. In the dream 'I was driving through tall thick pine trees in a mobile missile launcher. There were two of us ... We came into a clearing of huge trees and got out. The pilot climbed into the missile and it took off ...'
