Employment

Birmingham artist and jeweller. Gaskin was brought up in Wolverhampton. The family moved to Birmingham in about 1879. In 1883 Gaskin entered the School of Art. Within two years he was appointed as Assistant Master, even though he had not completed his full student course. It was there that he met, fellow student, Georgie Evelyn Cave France (1866-1934) whom he married on 21 March 1894. Gaskin's effectiveness as a teacher under the regime of Edward Richard Taylor was greatly enhanced by an interest in crafts, especially metalwork, and he was elevated to the Head Mastership of the School of Jewellery and Silversmithing in 1903. Arthur and his wife Georgie both took to jewellery making as a second career when they were mature artists. The couple lived in Acocks Green, Birmingham and later in Olton, Solihull.
